More than a million UK-funded condoms will be used worldwide this National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, according to the Department for International Development (DFID).
People in developing countries will use 1.3 million condoms, at a rate of 15 per second, as part of Britain’s contribution to the global war on AIDS.
DFID’s Chief Scientific Advisor, Prof. Sir Gordon Conway, said: "Every condom used is one small victory in the global war against AIDS, particularly in Africa where AIDS is the primary cause of death."
An estimated 6,000 people will die from AIDS today, most in poor countries. The UK provides condoms as part of an international effort to stem the spread of HIV. While it has slowed globally, the virus still infects 7,000 people a day. Since 2001 the UK has provided 1 billion condoms for use in the developing world.
